Giving notice, the check-out, and getting your deposit back smoothly.
You can give notice at any time. It needs to be at least two months, in writing (a quick email is fine), and timed so your tenancy ends on a rent day or the day before one. If you’d like to leave sooner, ask us — a shorter notice is fine if the landlord agrees in writing. In a joint tenancy, notice from one tenant can end the tenancy for everyone, so talk to your housemates first. We’ll confirm your end date in writing.
Your deposit is protected in a Government-approved scheme, and it is returned to you at the end of the tenancy in line with that scheme’s rules. After the check-out we’ll agree any deductions with you — for example for damage beyond fair wear and tear, cleaning, or unpaid rent — and then the deposit is released. If anything can’t be agreed, the scheme provides a free, independent dispute service, so there’s always a fair route to a decision.
The best way to protect your deposit is simple: look after the home throughout your tenancy, report repairs early, and leave the property clean and clear at the end. If you’re unsure about anything before you go, just ask — we’re happy to help.
