Looking after your home

Simple, everyday care that keeps your home comfortable — and helps protect your deposit.

Tenants › Looking after your home

Everyday care

  • Let your home breathe. Open windows for a short while each day, especially after showering, cooking or drying clothes, to keep moisture down.
  • Heat gently and steadily. A little background warmth through the colder months is cheaper and healthier than short, fierce blasts — and it keeps damp at bay.
  • Keep it clean and clear. Regular cleaning stops small problems building up; wipe down kitchens and bathrooms to prevent grease and mould.
  • Mind the extractor fans. Let them run during and after cooking or bathing, and keep the grilles free of dust.

Staying safe & compliant

  • Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly — a quick press of the button is all it takes. Tell us straight away if one is faulty.
  • Never block or cover vents, flues or air bricks. They are there to keep the air — and any gas appliances — safe.
  • Give access for safety checks. We’re required to carry out an annual gas safety check and periodic electrical checks; we’ll always arrange these with you in advance.
  • Don’t make alterations (painting, drilling, new fixtures) without asking us first — a quick message saves problems later.

Gardens & outside space

If your tenancy includes a garden, please keep it tidy and under control — mow the lawn, keep beds and paths clear, and put bins out and back on the right collection days for your street. Report any fencing, guttering or drainage problems to us rather than trying to fix them yourself.

Report issues early

A small drip, a loose handle or a patch of damp is far easier (and cheaper) to put right early. The quickest way to get a repair logged, tracked and sorted is our maintenance reporter — the more detail and photos you can give us, the faster we can help. Looking after the home well throughout your tenancy also makes for a smooth check-out and helps protect your deposit.
